  1. The web is a great place for taking in a couple of paragraphs to get the gist of something. But the urge to click onto something else is too great for most of us to read anything of any length.

    So I would support Rene and, indeed, go further. White papers are:
    1. How you educate the buyer in which parameters are important in making their buying decision (hopefully steering them onto your turf and putting in some which competitors can’t achieve).
    2. How you help them be a “sneezer”, spreading the idea around their company.
    3. How you position yourself as the thought leader in your industry – with insight which shows you really know your stuff.
    4. A way of introducing third party recommendations for your solution. Quotations from respected figures supporting what you are saying gives your words more weight.
    5. How you give them confidence that they have all the information they need to make a buying decision – thus shortening your sales cycle.

    They now play a vital part in nurturing buyers from first touch to qualified lead. But they can also expose you as boring, corporate and with nothing new or compelling to offer. They are not something to cut and paste from the net, or write in an evening, but serious professional documents which act as your silent salesman.
